Basilica

The Co-Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kołobrzeg is a jewel of Pomeranian Gothic architecture!
Built of brick between the 13th and 15th centuries, the first Mass was celebrated there as early as 1321.
Over the centuries, it changed denominations – from a Catholic collegiate church, through a Lutheran church and a church of the Prussian Union Church, to its almost complete destruction during the fighting for the Kołobrzeg Fortress in 1945.
After the war, it was restored under the care of the Catholic Church – it was reopened for worship in 1957, and in 1972 it was granted the status of co-cathedral of the Diocese of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg, whilst in 1986 Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica.
