The Monument to Poland’s Union with the Sea

The Monument to Poland’s Marriage to the Sea, unveiled in 1963, commemorates the symbolic event of 18 March 1945, when soldiers of the 1st Polish Army performed a ritual marriage with the Baltic Sea. The monument depicts a stylised flag held by a group of soldiers, and its design draws on prehistoric rock paintings. At the base of the monument are plaques bearing the names of the military units that took part in the battles for Kołobrzeg. The monument is an important site of national remembrance.
