The Marianas of Kołobrzeg

The sculptures of charming seagulls dotted around the town are one of Kołobrzeg’s most interesting and most frequently photographed attractions. The project was conceived by Dariusz Jakubowski, and the figures were sculpted by local artist Romuald Wiśniewski. Each of the dozen or so ‘Marian’ sculptures (around 11–13) depicts a seagull in a human-like situation – for example, as a pirate, a beachgoer, a cyclist or a WOŚP volunteer – and measures just 30–40 cm. The ‘Marian’ trail runs through the town centre, along the boulevards, the promenade and the seaside estates – it’s a brilliant idea for a walk, especially with children.
