Kołobrzeg is a true gem of the Baltic Sea, where history intertwines with the magic of nature and a touch of adventure. Kołobrzeg also beckons with its history – monuments, the Town Hall, the Basilica, museums, the Blacksmith’s Workshop, the Fishing Port, Fort Ujście and the Maritime Open-Air Museum all serve as a reminder that this city has many stories to uncover. The name ‘Kołobrzeg’ derives from the words ‘koło brzegu’, meaning ‘by the shore’ – a reference to the settlement’s location near the mouth of the Parsęta River where it flows into the Baltic Sea. The first records of the settlement date back to the 9th century (it appeared in historical documents as ‘Colobrega’, ‘Colobregan’ or ‘Colberg’ (in the German version)). In 1255, Duke Barnim I granted Kołobrzeg town privileges under Lübeck law. Today, Kołobrzeg combines a rich maritime heritage, a spa town character and a modern face full of attractions.
