The name ‘Kołobrzeg’ derives from the words ‘koło brzegu’, meaning ‘by the shore’ – a reference to the settlement’s location near the mouth of the Parsęta River where it flows into the Baltic Sea. The first records of the settlement date back to the 9th century (it appeared in historical documents as ‘Colobrega’, ‘Colobregan’ or ‘Colberg’ (in the German version)). In 1255, Duke Barnim I granted Kołobrzeg town privileges under Lübeck law. Today, Kołobrzeg combines a rich maritime heritage, a spa town character and a modern face full of attractions.
